An environmental indicator is a measure, generally quantitative, that can be used to illustrate and communicate complex environmental phenomena simply, including trends and progress over time — and thus helps implement knowledge-based environmental policymaking and communicate with the public.

EEA supported development of selected water and biodiversity indicators from the UNECE set of environmental indicators (see the UNECE environmental indicators) to exemplify the implementation of the MDIAK (Monitoring- Data-Indicator-Assessment-Knowledge) chain.
