ENI SEIS II South in-country support to Libya - national workshop to identify Libyan priority indicators to assess the state of marine environment
In the framework of ENI SEIS II South Support Mechanism in-country support, CEDARE and UBA-Vienna are organising a workshop for Libyan experts in Alexandria, Egypt 11-12 September 2018.
This workshop identified key Libyan coastal and marine priority issues and the main issues contributing to the pollution and degradation of the coastal and marine areas. It further determined the relevant coastal and marine indicators, shared experiences on detection of the transboundary marine issues, established the national and regional data source in Libya and developed a structure for Libya’s state of the coastal and marine environment report.
The workshop balanced presentations and discussions. Presentations focused on the principals of integrated environmental assessment, DPSIR framework, Causal Chain Analysis, overview of regional and national coastal and marine issues, indicators development and H2020/SEIS indicators.
The working groups discussed:
- Identification and prioritisation of coastal and marine issues;
- Determination of the impacts of priority issue(s);
- Analysis of the causes for priority issue(s);
- Possibility for a rapid Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis for the main coastal and marine issues between Egypt and Libya;
- Identification of relevant indicators;
- Identification of the data sources;
- Development of state of the coastal and marine environment report structure.
Outcomes of the workshop:
- List of the main Coastal and marine priority issues in Libya;
- Causal chain analysis of marine issues;
- Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis for the main coastal and marine issues between Egypt and Libya;
- List of priority indicators;
- DPSIR table of coastal and marine issues;
- List of data sources;
- Proposed structure of the Libya state of the coastal and marine environment report.
