2-3 March 2020 | The EEA team builds capacity of air quality monitoring in the Republic of Moldova

Countries: Moldova

Building capacity in using and accessing air quality data is a part of the ENI SEIS II East project. The objective is to increase the use and public accessibility of air quality measurement data in accordance with the EU Directive on air quality. The first regional workshop on air quality  monitoring kicked off this process for the Eastern Partnership countries in 2018 and the second regional workshop took place in 2019.

The team of experts from the European Environment Agency (EEA), Norwegian Institute for Air Research, 4Sphere and the national experts evaluated the status of the air quality monitoring in terms of legal and institutional frameworks. They reviewed existing ICT infrastructure and monitoring system. Focus was on the quality assurance and data processing, dissemination and final reporting.  The experts evaluated and identified existing air quality data from the Environment Agency of the Republic of Moldova.  They identified possibilities for the data dissemination and reporting taking the EU Air Quality Directive 2008/50 as baseline reference.

The EEA team trained national experts on using RAVEN+ platform that is utilised by the EEA to manage air quality data. RAVEN+ platform was successfully  deployed on the Environment Agency's of the Republic of Moldova server.  These actions are in line with the upcoming legislation on Air Quality that is based on the EU Directive due for the Government's approval by the end of 2020.
