Country Visit Egypt - National Workshop ENI SEIS Phase II , Cairo, Egypt, Nov 30 to Dec 1 2016

The ENI SEIS II South Support Mechanism team visited Egypt on 30 November and 1 December 2016 and participated in a 2-day workshop with the Egyptian partners involved in environment data and information. The aim of the workshop was to discuss national priorities and prepare a national work plan for the implementation of SEIS II for the period 2017-2019.

The workshop, hosted by the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) and the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA), was facilitated by the EEA, the Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE) and the Austrian environment agency, Umweltbundesamt (UBA).

The first part of the workshop took stock of the lessons learned from the first phase of SEIS cooperation and introduced the ENI SEIS II South Support Mechanism , with particular emphasis on the linkages between the project and the H2020 programme of work for 2015-2020 and the Barcelona Convention measure to reduce marine pollution in the region. Presentations on the MED POL activities in Egypt, the Alexandria Coastal Zone Management project (ACZMP), the National Statistics Strategy of CAPMAS, and solid waste management by the Waste Management Regulatory Authority (WMRA) provided the baseline for discussion on national priorities and the need to further the implementation of SEIS in Egypt.

The second part of the workshop looked in more detail at the national vision for SEIS, the country’s specific needs and concrete elements to be included in a national work plan. This resulted in an outline national work plan, including recommendations to include additional Egyptian stakeholders on the national committee. The outcomes of the workshop were presented at the project steering committee meeting in Athens in December 2016.
